Wing Clipping

We are having a small problem with our Quail in the avairy,they are flying around and at night they get up to the top perch.
Can the wings be clipped to stop this..

King quail shouldn't ever perch on anything.
more likely they are being frightened by something.
Yes, the wings can be clipped. Someone else will have to tell you how though never done it before.

I find just taking the first 4 primaries will stop them flying but let them land gracefully enough not to hurt themselves ( parrots ) so I assume it would prevent a quail from getting any height on take off .

Hi justdeb,is that just one wing or both,as i found with quail clipping both wings enablesthem to still fly.Clipping one wing puts them off balance prohibiting getting off the ground. cheers Craig

Hi Harvey, as deb has said cut primaries on one wing, thus worked for with pigeons many years ago due to needing to home them before letting them fly free. Doing only one wing want allow balance during flight as both wings flap at the same rate, if both are done then balance will remain but flight ability will be hindered. When restricting flying with pigeons people would either tape, cut or pluck all primaries on one wing while others would suggest taking secondaries also but I don't think there would be much of a difference. When cutting take it back as close to the wing cover feathers without touching the wing, when the quail moults then the primary feathers will return

I cut both wings on the parrots , someone with quail experience might be able to help you with that answer Harv .

I cut 3 or 4 primaries first and then take a couple more if they can still get too much height . They need to be able to land without crashing .

So Im slow
