Hi everyone, hope all are well. As a newbie to this forum i have been reading a lot about the problems people have with mice. I myself have some problems myself but not to the extent of some however i am wondering if people have any comments or thoughts on the following: i have read that adding Cayenne pepper to the finch food will deter mice as the mice dont like it all all and birds actually do like it-i havent tried it myself, but i know birds are fine and actually love hot chilli's and so forth cos my parrots do.
Ok second suggestion and question: what about the peppermint/clove lavender oil thing. Apparently if you spray it around the aviaries it deters mice as they do not like the smell, although i have read mice dont like any new smells. If it is pure peppermint oil which i think is the main smell they dont like you only ned do it once a month.
I realise mice can be smart and all these things may not work 100% but hey if it deters 80 % of mice that is a success in my books.
The last thing i would like to add is that i have been reading about these sonic sonar electrical devices witht he high frequency sound that deter mice- yes they may work initially but they do not work in the long term as mice will get used to the high pitched noise-or so i am told...so anyone out there with longterm success i would love to hear about it-not short term.
Ok thats my input-try to to jump on me the first day if i hav said anything to offend anyone...:)

The only permanent solution is a snap trap, 95% of the time it permanently gets rid of the mouse but only drawback is that it only catch one except in rare occasions. Bait is another good one also but you don't know how many actually die. As for the sonic device will it affect the birds or even dogs with the high pitch sounds.

At work we use cage traps, caught a mouse and a rat today... Feisty buggers, mouse gave me a nip.
Maybe I'm a softy but I hate seeing them drown when we put them out :( even if they ate however many king quail or finches, surely there's a better way to go.
Never used a sonic device, but have heard of ones that deter the mice and don't bother the dog. Not sure as to effectiveness.

I'm going to ask my workmate to show me cervical dislocation, as she has shown me before but I want to make sure I know how to do it correctly!!

We had our first still alive mouse in the trap yesterday and it was awful having to kill it (I made poor Kylie do it! And as she said, she previously had her Dad to do all of that but they've moved to Melbourne!!) :/ The dogs were eager to give it a go, but couldn't let them do it either :/

Ha! I meant try NOT to jump on me-sheesh my nails are too lomg and i cant bear to cut them-is that the correct spelling for bear when used in this contexzt-it looks rather strange???
Anyway my issue is i cannot use mouse bait as i have 6 doggies- and also cats who do their job pretty good actually and actualy leave the birds alone. But also i dont want to use mouse traps either in case some paw gets caught int he trap.
I do wonder is there a preffered climate for mice? or just wherever the food is they will travel...?

I'm no scholar but I think you are correct with bear? but I do know long is spelt with a n not a m and context does't have a z in it  Ok I'll leave you alone now :silent:
As for sonic devices they only displace mice not eliminate, baits put in a bait station are pretty safe from other animals and traps can be placed under a myriad of containers with a weight on top to prevent other animals from being snapped.

I have dogs too and I have been loathe to put bait down close to the aviary due to seeing a mouse poop blue before leaving an aviary a couple of years ago. I reckon I lost birds due to that and I was worried about the dogs and the birds.
Lat year I bought about 20 ex show cages really cheap and I have placed them around the garden and in the shed and garage with bait inside, thats my first line of defense, then at the back of each aviary I have put some more with traps set up. I even have one with a snap trap set up in each aviary. There is evidence of the bait being eaten and I have caught mice with the snap traps outside but not in the aviary so far. Im hoping that if they get as far as the aviary they will be weak from my first line of defense and looking for an easy to get to food source and will go for the outside box with the trap. I bait the traps with meat.

I know Caynene pepper deters cats and dogs. They have sensative noses. But can't comment on rodents and birds.

Cayenne wont work, my rat's love chillis lol, the sonic things I haven't had any experience with as breeding pet rats of course makes using those sorts of deterrents a bit hard lol Personally I just go snap traps, quick and efficient a good cat can also do a good job :)
*waits for lynch mob after mentioning rats and cats as pets in the one sentence *
