I have 4 gouldians in a holding cage -2 are yellow and white bodied-i think they are called Australian yellows and the other 2 are the same except have purple breasts-anyway i got in real close to look at them today and they started opening their beaks at me -i thought OMG they are stargazing and then i thought air sac mites-which i lived on the Gold Coast about 5 years ago and my gouldians got air sac mite back then, which i was able to save them thanks to Moxidectin and Peter Wilson...so anyway i picked them up and listened closely and did NOT hear any clicking noise-and then i backed off and watched from afar and they stopped with the open mouth thing-does anyone htink they were simply trying to tell me to back off? Or any other ideas-i dont know much about the Gouldian temperament except that they are supposed to be docile-any insights would be good-thank you in advance.

Could quite possibly just have been them telling you to back off
docile most of the time but savages at other times! Next time you have one in your hand, put your finger near its beak, I dare you

I have seen my male finch do this to other finches that come to close to the entrance of his nest box. I'm pretty sure it is a warning to back off. One of my females has also done this when I've tried to get her out of the nest box.
