Hi
I live on the Fraser Coast and am finding it difficult to find anyone that stocks Ivermectin or Moxydectin. If anyone on here lives in the area and knows please let me know? Alternatively good online source that is reliable and is decent price wise.
Got my boy Gould yesterday and the lady I got him off gives them Moxydectin in their water regularly the girls come Today and I believe have been done too, but I still need to get some and regularly dose.
Thankyou for your help

My girls arrived Today so I couldn't wait for mail order and managed to find a vet that said on the phone they had it in stock and after some drama with his nurse got put onto the vet and he agreed to supply me over the counter.
So off I went and guess what they sold me - cat/kitten strength advocate the main ingredient is moxidectin. Charged me twice the price I normally pay for advocate too.
Grrrr
One of the girls seems to tire easily and gets out of breath so I think she may be more susceptible to the air sac mites, so I am not going to buy a boy for her now and will let her retire in a cage by herself in the office to keep the hubby company.
Of course she may be fine by morning and it could of just been stress. I will just keep a eye on her.

Hi Lestra,
Did the vet actually give you any instructions on how to apply it to a finch, given that it's designed for cats/kittens?

He said its the same as the moxydectin that is sold a drop on the back of the head or mix in water. He gave me the warning that moxydectin is not marketed for birds and though it is rare some birds react badly to it.
The girls are fine but the boy I found dead at 5am. Maybe it was too close to his last dose, I only got a vague he has been treated for air sac mites recently when I got him, so played it safe than sorry, well I am sorry.
Mr 7 is doing to be devastated, he loves birds/animals sooooo much.
That's the problem here, no avian vets here at all. I will order some through the forum next pay as then I know I am getting the right stuff from people that know about finches.

It wasn't the medicine. It was all my fault. I feel like such a idiot and soooo aweful.
I just noticed the girls acting wierd near the auto waterer (refreshed daily), it was too far from the perch. He had never gone near the water when I was in the room so I assumed he was drinking when I was out of the room.
I feel like the most aweful person on the planet right now.
I have moved it so it is right up against the calcium perch and the girls are drinking really well.
I had taken the bird bath out over the weekend to wash and had forgotten to put it back in. The poor little guy.
lesson learnt, but dam I wish I hadn't had to learn my mistake this way.

It's very unfortunate lestra but don't be too hard on yourself- we've all made similar mistakes in the past.
So long as we learn from them and hopefully don't repeat them then that is what life is about! :)

I went to the breeder and got another boy. I mentioned the auto waterer and she said her birds have never seen one and wouldn't have a clue what it was.
So since the girls are fine with it where it is I have left it in plus a plastic container of water down the bottom.
I might do a thread about these to see if others have had problems, maybe if there is a common issue other newbies will see the thread and know to avoid the dam things.

Hi Lestra.
I know that your last post was back in May, how did you get on with getting Moxidectin ? Make sure you get 'Moxidectin PLUS' this is a broad spectrum wormer & mite & also does air sac mite, which is a must with gouldians. Have a look at www.melbournebirdvet.com site. They are avian vets & will do mail order.

G'day Loz, Lestra would be better off getting it at Ausralian Wildlife Supplies in Qld or order some from our Moderator,Gomer in Merchandise. Craig
