We had a nest of painteds last week that was seemingly having problems.
They were in a tiny cane basket when we first checked them. There were 4 live babies and 1 dead..
Two babies looked to be having a bit of trouble breathing, plus they had a bit of a mucous around their mouths. We removed them from the nest and brought them in and made a nest in our hot box for them.
One unfortunately died overnight and the other was looking semi-okay.. Went out to check the aviary again that day and found one baby in the middle of the aviary on the floor dead :( We decided to remove the other baby before it had a chance to get sick or thrown from the nest.

The semi-okay baby died the next day - but the healthy dude is thriving and he has been feeding from us extremely well for the last week.

Here is a video of him and his nestmate feeding last night :)

His nestmate is a plummie which was a whoopsie as we were removing our trellis things full of brush - as we thought no one was nesting, and were also taking the plummies to auction this weekend. When we were removing the brush to put in the bin we stumbled across this little one :/
He is also doing very well and they're good at keeping each other warm :)

Many thanks to spanna, who is always willing to help. I'm sure you're sick of receiving texts from me by now though ;D

Very rewarding when they fly towards you, even though you know its really the food they want!

Never get sick of helping out!
It is a very rewarding but tough task to hand rear. My little hand reared painted hen still flies to me for cuddles, even though she's been fully independent for months now.

Good work, they look healthy and happy.

Just thought I would post updated pics of our little children as of tonight.

We're looking pretty close to 'fledging', well the plumhead is looking closer, but you get the idea :)
We're so proud of the little tackers!

They even had their first outing today to the Finch Society of WA auction! All fared very well, tough we did get a little warm in the shed towards the end being that the temperature got up around 28!

Another update as we're both now flying a little bit.

This is where we decided to land while mum was trying to feed :P
