Hi all,
My painted have been sitting on eggs for about 3 weeks now and have just abandoned them, I assume they are infertile. Do I take them out of the nest or will the birds kick them out themselves? These are my first ever finch eggs so I am not sure what to do. Good news though I have just been watching them chase each other around the aviary so hopefully they will try again.
Thanks
David

I find that if you leave the nest and eggs there they will build and lay over the top. You can throw them out and pull the nest apart or take the eggs out and throw in more feathers and they will reline the nest, its up to you.

Unfortunately this email was ages ago.
I forgot how obvious this is.
but the simple answer is to gather the eggs, put them in your hand, & if they are warm the birds are still sitting.
Place a torch against them (candleing) in a dark room) and if they have solid &/or veiny appearance they may still be active. I always say give a finch 1 week longer than you expected because you may be surprised .
If not, which sounds likely by yr birds behaviour, then add a bunch of nesting materials & they should nest again.\
