Safety doors

Never been a fan of safety doors, well that all changes today. As I open one of the doors to the aviary ( aviary has two door neither has a safety door) two mynas hit the opposite side of the aviary and my 6 days fledged gouldian darts right over my head. It hadn't flown a foot above head height when the bloody myna had got a hold of it, over the rear fence it was gone. I could hear the cries from over the fence so up I jump and the is the little Gould on the neighbors ground about a 15ft drop away. This is where I add I'm about a 130kg male not built for fence climbing!!! But I wasn't going to let the little fella sit there and be taken, so over I went scaling the neighbors tree to give me some support and with net in hand it was back. no came the embarrassing part as I was back on top of the fence I got stuck and had to call the wife for some help so I could get back down and at that moment is when the neighbor decides she will come out and see what I'm am doing. Here I am stuck on a fence with a little net and birdy inside, well I'm sure I made her day. Next aviary will have a safety door

My son helped me yesterday with my birds. He emerged to the outside of the aviaries from the safety door and announced "there was a bird in the airlock and it flew in to a flight but I'm not sure if it's in the right one". A few swishes with the net soon captured the baby Gouldian from the opposite side of the airlock flight and returned to his mum & dad. What my son hadn't noticed was that as there are actually three flights off the safety door the bird must have been in the safety area while he went in to the middle flight as well.

I'm so scared of aviaries without safety area these days I even bought snap_point's old aviary just because it has a safety door, now I have an empty aviary "just in case" I ever need another holding aviary that I can easily get in and out of.

I was reading this with baited breath while drinking coffee....then comes this part....

the embarrassing part as I was back on top of the fence I got stuck and had to call the wife for some help so I could get back down and at that moment is when the neighbor decides she will come out and see what I'm am doing. Safety doors are a must for anyone breeding birds. Accept maybe penguins. It is far too upsetting to have them fly past into danger.

For the last nearly three years since I had my first aviary it has not had a safety door. I have had 2 escapes with happy consequences fortunately as I got them back...one via a trap and one care of a Butcher Bird. I did make one addition last year when I had friends in for a month bird sitting when my wife made a net to hang over the door. Anyway after experience building a second aviary with safety door I decided to add one to the first aviary. As I know photos are popular I have included a couple of shots of the building of the door. I obtained some colourbond sheets as per the original for a knock down price from a shed manaufacturer and riveted to 20mm channels. The roof is a sheet of polycarbonate to provide light in the door annex also obtained from surplus stock. The door is made from the 20mm channels. I trust yo'all will find it of interest....RGDS

My parrots love a free fly around the safety flight while Im cleaning their cages , bonus .
