I got back from Perth for being away 3 days for my 32 week OB checkup and was doing the rounds this morning. When I got to my main breeding aviary I noticed a serious lack of birds :(

So far the tally is 5 quail, 3 Tricoloures PF, 3 OBs, 1 pr Melbas, 1pr Gouldins and Im pretty sure some of my Owl finches and painteds are missing :(

I have turned the aviry upside down and cannot find what I suspect to be the culprit, a python. No idea how it woudl have gotten in either :(

I am sooooo upset!!! All birds were accounted for when I left Sunday morning :(

Remianing birds are being cuaght to be put in holding aviaries until I can figure out what happened.

WA Breeders Ill be in Perth having bubs from mid December to end of Jan so Ill be looking to restock and try again. Not sure how I will manage logistically since Ill be staying at my folks and our cousins place so any ideas would be great.

Ill put something up on the ISO threads...

Why does this happen when you go away... :( :( :( :( :( :(

So sorry to hear, hope you catch/locate the cause soon. And good luck with your Christmas/New Year baby too. Sure members will be happy to help locating birds and wetting babys head.

That is awful! Poor little things.
that is a lot for a snake to eat - is there a hole somewhere?
Hope you find a solution.

That sucks :( I'm so sorry; I know how crap it is to lose birds when you're away.

Sorry to hear that, I'd be checking for a RAT, or several. Not a python. Look in hidey holes for the remains.

So sorry to hear about that, having lost birds to snakes myself I know how it feels, but I agree with others who have said it doesn't sound like a snake, unless it's one of the human variety. One reptile wouldn't eat that many birds in three days.

Sorry for your loss. I've lost birds to snakes too but never to a python so be careful. I found a very full 6ft eastern brown when I was about 14. It managed to get under the corrugations of the roof as it was covered by vines making a handy ladder for it. Capturing it without getting bitten was quite a task - I'd never let one of my kids do it (my mother must have been apoplectic). Of recent times my snakes were much smaller, less deadly but more abundant (I was on Luzon in the Philippines for 8 years). I usually found these arboreal nocturnal predators inside nests digesting their night's hunt but I did find a cat snake under a log on the dirt floor once too. If there's a snake all you can do is systematically remove all the hardware feeders, nest boxes etc and then start on the brush. You will loose nests but that's better than loosing your breeding stock. I never had a snake that that could find it's way out after a feed as the hole it entered by becomes too small after a feed of birds. If you can't find it then I'd go Tintola's diagnosis of a rat. They are far more cunning than a snake but they are creatures of habit so remove the birds to a safe cage but keep the feed in the aviary but poison it. I hope you get what caused it and identify the entry points and can eliminate them.

It was 41 degrees today so not the most idea of conditions for aviary recon!! I managed to get the birds that were left trapped and into holding aviaries until I can figure things out. I have removed all nesting cylinders and boxes and truned up no snakes. I have also checked all the potted plants and checked over the entire aviary floor and looked along the endges for any holes-NOTHING!!! I have also checked thoroughly for any holes in the wire or sheetmetal also NOTHING!! I am completely baffled! I found no carcasses either :(

I will be putting some fresh baits in tomorrow and I will go and shine the torch in over the next few nights as well. I have also compressed the ground all around the endges and inside so if any fresh dug holes come up I will see them easily.

Ill leave it for a week and see if anything turns up then I will put a few zebras in (poor little fellas:( ) and see if they remain for a week and then go from there.

Im so glad my Blue Gouldians hadnt come yet as they were going to be going in that aviary!! Im most sad about the Tannies sonce they were my most expensive birds taken :(

If anyone else has any ideas let me know. The aviary is 6 x 3 x 2 m so Im pretty sure Ive covered it all. This is the frustrating part of the hobby!
