Today I noticed that a male Ruddie had one eye closed. He seemed normal in every other respect other than sitting quietly in the sun. There did not appear to be anything on or around the eye but just closed. Could it have a piece of seed in it or some other problem that I am not aware of. Should I just leave it or catch and bathe eye area with water or some other process. Would welcome comments...thanks

If this is still the case I would catch the bird out. Bathe the eye in scaley face medication, just in case. Every 2 days for one week. Eye infection is very infectious so be sure to clean everything.

I cannot agree with bathing the eye with an insecticide. Would you do it with your own eye?

I do agree with bathing the eye with some clean or salty water or saline eye drops. Whilst you're at it feel the bird's body condition and check that it isn't thin.
If the eye appears to have any sort of ulcer on the surface then you may need to also add some antibiotic eye drops if you can get hold of some ( without cortisone in it)

Thanks for responses. I washed the eye with water and think it was a piece of seed. Bird seemed fine shortly after and shows no sign of problem to date.
