Finally after 2 years with my pair of Cobalts i may have a Violet or 2 out of the nest plus a Opaline (2nd Clutch). 1st Clutch they got another Opaline to the perch.
My questions are, If parents are throwing Opaline, how does this work and what sex is the Opaline? Been told the Opalines will be Hens is this correct?
And what will the Opalines be ie Opaline Cobalt or Opaline Violet or will i get both?

Thanks :D

Opaline is sex linked recessive, so dad is split for opaline and any opaline young are hens. Opaline is independent of dark factor which is autosomal dominant so could be opaline plus either or both body colours.

Do you mean Mauve not violet, violet is a dominant colour modifier and seperate to the dark factor gene, mauve is double dark factor on a blue bird, to get a violet you need a violet bird to start with, two cobalts will produce on average 25% sky, 50% cobalt and 25% mauve (respectively 0 dark factors,1 dark factor and 2 dark factors)

forgot to say the best visual violets are produced as either df violet on a sky blue or single factor violet on a cobalt, violet is my favourite colour :)

Violet is very effective in clearwing with the contrast of the violet body and the white wings and tail. Particularly if you get a double factor violet with really clear wings and tail.

Sounds all good from the replies Thanks. All young last year were Cobalts.

Deb, how many Violets is that for you then? And how did you pair your birds and what was changed? Any Violets for sale and how dark are they. Sorry i can't think of any more questions for you deb.

Thanks.

I had the Cobalt with a sky blue bird , old mate put the lilac hen with cobalt boy and predicted I would get cobalts and a variety of shades of violet ...
The first clutch produced 1 very dark violet , this clutch I have no idea what you would call the colours ..Ill have to get photos up .....
