On Sunday my elderly Mum is heading over to Perth for Xmas and needed someone to look after her budgie. The usual neighbour was unable so I volunteered. Anyway she shows up this morning and as I take the cage from her car I notice it's a different bird, so I say "Mum this isn't your budgie?". It's the same mutation (harlequin - recessive pied) but this one is a young bird and it also has PBFD with no primary flight feathers at all. Mum's budgie was at least 8 years old. So sometime in the last month or so (based on age of the new budgie) her bird has presumably died and some caring person has managed to find one that's the same mutation and sneak it into the cage without her noticing (pretty clever really). I find it irritating that some pet shop has sold someone a bird with no primary flight feathers but that's a different issue. Anyway, whilst having a cuppa, we've come up with a list of suspects but no definite person of interest. She also said she nearly rang me a week or so ago as she thought the budgie might have been sick as it was "rather quiet and looked a bit darker than normal". She honestly thought the extra darker feathers on it's head where a sign of illness. And it's quiet because it's a baby hen (not cock) and it's not obsessed with idiotic chattering at it's reflection in the mirror.

Beautiful Christmas story and your mother obviously has some nice people around her that care about her.

My wife has been nursing the elderly for 25 years before her retirement and I know through her work what in important part pets play in their lives. It gives the elderly purpose and something to care for. If you find the "culprit" give him/her a medal.

cheers, case

When my daughter was young we had a large fish tank and the Albino Cory was her favourite.
This fish went through many reincarnations and the "culprit" was not detected for over a decade

Cheers

Little old lady sent her cat from Sydney to Melbourne by plane, to be picked up by relatives, and she was to fly down in next day when she had tied up a few loose ends. On receiving the cat the rels were horrified to realise that the cat was dead so they went to the pound and rescued a very similar coloured black cat, hoping that she would not notice and avoid upsetting her. After picking her up from the airport and driving her to her new abode and what they hoped would be a happy reunion, the old girl let out a yell stating that "that is not my cat"! The relatives asked what she meant and she replied, My cat was dead! I was bringing back here to bury it.

Not very happy xmas story but a true one .

My Nan in her twilight years was quite intolerable of noise .. Aunty bought her 2 little budgies to keep nan entertained while home alone .
On a visit to Nans ,sitting in the kitchen after our lunch of tomato sangas the budgies became very active at the same time Nan was running the water to wash up .
The noise became quite loud and irritating which didn't please nan as we saw by her actions ...

Slowly and deliberately Nan turned around , step by step she drew closer to the birds in their cage , lifted the cage door and with precision and swiftness caught 1 budgie in each hand  we were gobsmacked by her dexterity next came the part that still has me traumatized .

With shuffling little steps Nan returned to her sink and promptly dunked both birds into the sink full of sudsy water , turned and made her way back to the cage where she returned the budgies to their cage where they sat quietly for the rest of the day . :o :o :o

We never gave Nan any reason to be cranky with us after that :silent:
