Not long got back from being at the beach and having tea at the beach. 42 here today left the birds alone and not long went up with some water and to check. 7 Gouldian Cocks dead. 1 Pastel, 3 Split Blues and 3 BH Normals (2 WB and 1 PB/WB). All were set aside for this years breeding.
Now to sort out what i can do.

That's sad news AMCA....it was 42 in my avairy today as well...fortunately I had installed a large shade cloth "sail" over half the roof and the front section of my avairy (facing West). This combined with the watering of the roof seemed to help the birds....if only I had done this yesterday....and maybe I wouldn't have lost a blue hen
I changed their water 3 times today, but they didn't seem interested in the fresh water....remaining on the avairy floor from 2 PM til about 7 tonight.....so I think the shade cloth and watering system on the roof was the key for me....the shade cloth is going to stay installed until at least mid Feb. I can then roll it up and leave it on the lower section of my avairy roof (until next Jan)
Hope the wrest of your birds do well over the next 2 weeks....I just looked at the monthly forecast....the coolest day for the next 2 weeks is going to be 28 (tomorrow)....... with the majority of days being in the low 30's .....then cooling down towards the last week of Jan (well thats what the BOM is saying today)
Yes it was 42+ here today in Geelong, sorry for your loss,BUT we were given plenty of warning that this was coming so precautions should have been put in place.I went out and checked my birds water and changed it 3-4 times as well as hosed the the outside and inside floors down. They can handle the heat but can't go without water. Craig
All still had plenty of water. Just mentioned to someone else on the forum. Spewing more on the Split Blues rather than the Pastel Cock. And the WBs Normals that i bred were to go back to some Normal hens to see if they are Split WB. And of course all BHs mainly Pastel was RH and a YH Split Blue.
I will have to make the best of an ugly situation. Chins up.
Thats harsh isnt it Mickp. I only said to the wife coming home i wonder if we will ever see the 50deg in the suburbs of this Country.

Sorry to hear Mark, were they all in 1 flight? My guys stayed on the floor for most of the day, if you need any split blue cocks iv got some here for sale. what do others think of painting an aviary roof white? Will it make much difference in reflecting heat off the tin sheeting?
forty bloody nine Mickp ...are you kidding me ?
Girlfriend is travelling from cobar this weekend , bringing birds with her and leaving them here rather than back in cobar with the high temps . having all sorts of heat related issues already .
Bloody hot out there , best place to be is the bowling club , wonder if theyll let you take the birds in with you.
Sorry for your losses AMCA .. its every one worst fear at the mo with the heat ...the worst being the hot dry wind that sucks life out of all things breathing.
Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.
