Hey guys,
Just wondering if anybody has considered setting up a misting system to cool down their birds I. The hot weather.
As you are aware people have to work therefore I'm not at home 24/7 able to cool down my birds. I am thinking about setting up a misting system that comes on a timer for a couple of minutes a day to allow relief from the heat.
What are every bodies thoughts??

I have one. Used adjustable flow half sprays, hose runs along roof from rear to almost front and spray is up against roof, that way the front and front wire are watered but shrub and food areas are kept dry. Whole system is controlled by one of these http://www.holmanindustries.com.au/prog ... tap-timer/. It took a lot of re-reading the instructions and months of frustration to discover the reason why it wouldn't work was it shipped in winter mode
. Now its working it works great.

Having just setup a misting system for my fernery I have enough left of bits and pieces to build a misting system for the aviary. My plan is to fit 2 misting heads low down so if the birds want they can have a bath/cool off and it will wet the pavers and keep the floor cool. I'll use some sort of timer as above. I'll only use it on 30+ days.

Jim many of the finches prefer to fly through the mist rather than play in the puddles. Down low it won't have the same cooling effect on the aviary either.
G4, I find fewer longer sprays better, it gives the birds more time to play. It usually takes a minute or two for them to get going flying through it or finding their preferred spot under it. Mine runs for 10 minutes at 2pm and if above 35C for another five minutes at 4pm. Once the programs are set its easy to turn individual ones on and off so I have programs set for 11(5 mins), 2 (10 mins), and 4 (5 mins) but I only use the 11 one on days when it gets very hot early because it's been hot for days. My aviary is well sheltered by trees, even at 11 the eastern end still has some shade and by 4 the western end has some shade.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to rethink the design. If I put it up higher the seed will get wet...natamambo wrote:Jim many of the finches prefer to fly through the mist rather than play in the puddles. Down low it won't have the same cooling effect on the aviary either.
