Hi all..just wondering how everyones season is going? I have noticed that the majority of my young currently on the perch seem to be males..anyone else having a similar result? Last year I bred slightly more females.
My birds are just starting their 3rd rounds..hoping for more hens to pair off for next year!
Of my 4 pair, 2 have had one nest with 1 fledgling in each. The other 2 have done nothing????? Thinking that all the rain and crap weather here on the Gold Coast has influenced things... I moved one pair to a breeding cabinet about a week ago to see if that helps.
This season I put out 12 pairs to breed from. Only 8 pairs have so far produced young. They have so far fledged 68 young. 54 of these are from 6 black headed pairs & are nearly all of excellent size & type as are the parents. The other 14 are from yellow-headed to yellow-billed black headed mixed pairings & are of lesser size & more variable type due to the inferior quality of my yellow-headed stock at this stage. Sexes are very even.
My best pair of Gouldians (the best pair of breeding birds I have ever owned) are now in their fourth breeding season & still have a perfect breeding record - no infertile eggs, every egg hatched, & every young reared. They have just fledged 5 young after earlier rearing clutches of 6 & 7. They are the only pair to have fledged 3 rounds this year so I will now take their nest box away. They have so far produced 75 young in 4 years including some of the very best quality Gouldians in my collection.
Hi
My breeding season has been average,From whats showing seems to be even with cocks and hens,Not all pairs bred, two pairs went down once and stopped,Perth nights just too cold for the birds, had two nests of frozen chicks, Blue chicks last a month or two then die.
I had a heap of boxes in since January but nothing. . . . .
I then heaped grass in the boxes and they have all gone crazy.
Of my 5 pairs I have a first year BH GB PBnormal hen on 5 eggs paired to a single factor male (not intentional)
I have an aussie yellow hen on 4 eggs but not sure who it is paired to. It nesed in the diamonds roosting nest so they are now out building a new roosting nest.
I had a young yellow abandon her nest of 3 eggs however this was her first go.
This will be my first real go at breeding gouldians and so far i am happy with how easy and tough the birds seem to be.
Breeding Project 2020-2025.
agate mosaic canaries, agate yellow mosaic canaries, red zebs, self bengos and goldfinch mules.
Looking like breeding around 80 Blue and Splits from 14 pairs with only 9 pairs producing young. 90% of my pairs are 1st year birds. Had trouble with pairs having young but looks like cock birds wanting to go back to nest straight away and killing the young and removing them from the nest. But still happy as the birds are all quality young.
3 pairs of Normals with only 7 on the perch. 1 pair nothing and then recently 2nd pair laying in 3rd pairs nest while they already have young about to fledge so that has become annoying.
Breeding Show Zebra Finches, Blue Gouldians, Pied Orange Breast.
I have had a very good season so far in a mixed breeding colony of red and yellow headed pairs got about 30 young lost a few early but after that a high success rate
i have a pair of split blues sitting on 5 eggs - 4 are fertile and due to hatch any day now . good below zero overnight temps and very low day temp.
now if only the gouldian finch was classed as a hardy bird
