Title: "Aviculture in a tough climate."
Speaker: Julian Teh (ACT)

For July our speaker is one of the younger breed of finch enthusiast who has created quite an impact with his exploits to date. Julian Teh was one of the junior finch keepers sponsored to attend Finches '11 and created a real impact in 2012 when, after winning the ABK Young Aviculturist Writing Competition, he donated his prize (an aviary) to QFS to give to another junior - quite a gesture.

Growing up in the hills above Perth, Julian has been interested in birds since a very early age. He first started by watching birds, but when the family moved to Canberra in 2003, his interest quickly turned to keeping them too. He started in 2004 with three zebra finches and built his first aviary with his grandfather in 2008. Since then he has moved house twice, and had three different aviaries. Currently he enjoys a mixed collection of native and foreign finches, button quail, and a pair of Senegal doves. He remains an avid birdwatcher, and in the past few years has also joined a bird banding team that gathers data for scientific projects. Julian will speak about the challenges of finch keeping in the Canberra environment. Come along and celebrate the efforts of this young aviculturist.
It was a surprise and a pleasure to meet up and listen to Jayburd last Friday - I didn't go to the last meeting and didn't know he was coming. Australian ornithology and aviculture are in good hands with this guy's knowledge dedication and drive. I hope he enjoyed his Queensland sojourn and from all of us that attended; many thanks for the great talk.

  Your first speaking engagement J. Give it a year or so of practice and you can go on the major tele shows and talk the country into realizing the need to preserve endangered species.
