You can buy a neat one at Bunnings for considerably cheaper or there are many designs for building your own. http://www.bunnings.com.au/products_pro ... rol&page=9

Thanks Danny,

I recieved the quote from India this afternoon....(please see below)
You would hope that it would collect a hell of a lot of insects....

I'll head up to Bunnings on Monday (tomorrow will be far too busy, with Father's Day) & take a look....I was always concerned with these traps, that the insects would be killed outright...

I sure this is what I am after...

Thanks again Danny,

Cheers

What sort of birds are taking the trapped insects if you dont mind me asking Tiaris ?
And what are the typical insects trapped on any given night ?
Ive been seriously considering investing in one .
I have singers , melbas , blue caps , red strawbs , tcpfs , diamonds and crimsons ... they get mealies , vinegar fly and termites but I'm wanting to try other types of winged insects also .
Are there any types that should generally be avoided ?

A quick question though...

Does this trap need to be installed by an electrician?

No. it's just a plug in. A few people I know with this trap remove the catching basket at the bottom and replace it with a mesh bag to increase the holding capacity and reduce losses when undoing the basket. I usually just unclip the basket and flip it upside down into an ice cream bucket.

I use the Gecko brand one from bunnings (cost about $100) & they work just fine. I leave it running while I remove the basket, & cover it with a piece of cardboard while near the fan, don't have too many escapees. Then invert the funnel when in the aviary, giving a slow release of moths ect. over a period of time, until the Red-Backs figured they can fit through the hole in the bottom of the funnel & jump in for a smorgasbord before anything escapes & the Scarlets & Woodswallows can pick them off.

I do similar to VR1ton. I leave it running whilst removing the base & quickly slide an ice-cream container lid over the cage bit, rarely with any escapees. Then turn it off.

I use the trapped insects (mostly moths of many species) to feed to softbills (wrens, chats, robins). The finches in the adjoining aviaries catch the odd bug as they fly through the aviary partitions but I generally house non-insectivorous finches in with the softbills (mostly Gouldians) to minimise competition for bugs.

The cage on mine has a lid with little flaps that close due to gravity once the fan turns off.
I'm sure I posted photos on AFF a few years ago.
