If you try hard enough you can eventually get there.
After last breeding season I had two species that were massively out of balance sex wise.
Luckily the excess was with hen birds so it made life a little easier.
First specie Cordon Blues total 28 birds, 21 hens and 7 cockbirds, Mornington, Shepparton and Bendigo sales
plus a friend up North assisted in eventually even numbers. This was finally achieved about 6 weeks ago.
The second specie and what I thought would be easily rectified was the Painted Finch once again total 23 birds
and only 4 cockbirds. An easy bird to locate and match the sexes, oh was I wrong searching most sales I was only able to
locate the odd cockbird, gradually I paired up all but 8 birds. A Forum member helped out with 4 and I located a person at Singleton with 4 birds, the only odd birds in the whole sale from what I could see so now I and my lonely female Painteds will be happy. Several sales just didn't have Painteds available which is surprising but I will not be caught short again.
I hope there is not going to be a shortage of these great little birds in future years.
With the ones I had already paired up there has been 5 successful nests 2x2,1x3 and just before I went away 2 nests of 5 from adjoining aviaries and within a day of each fledging so the season is off an running.
In past years I have lost a number of Painteds through the winter period. This year not one was lost because I decided to bring them
in to a birdroom aviary. The aviary is NOT HEATED at all same temp inside as out but it has a totally dry sandy floor. I am convinced that the dry aviary was the answer to the total survival. It's worth thinking about.
Order now filled
