Have just done the half yearly clean out but have noticed during the vacuum of the aviaries that there was an inordinate amount of canola seed that was not eaten. Even the resident mice population don't eat it. (Matcho 12, Mice nil...weapon of choice ... the good old thong). On thinking of this it doesn't even get eaten eaten when in the soaked/sprouted food, it doesn't sprout anyhow. So my question is this....I have Goulds, painteds and stars and they dont touch it, what birds do? I even have a budgie and a Bourkes who are fed commercial food with canola and even they wont touch it. I reckon if I put in only canola seed for the birds as opposed to a mix of the millets 1 week would see me with nothing all.

To my way of thinking this seed is just a filler and makes up weight in the 20 kilo bags I buy. I buy a bag every month or so but have noticed in the past 6 months or so that there seems to be more canola than usual.

Anybody have similar experiences or thoughts about this?

Ken.

Not sure what eats it mine never really did.I used to get it for free but it seemed like a waste putting it in the mix.Maybe a small amount was eaten that I didn't even notice.

Hi Ken,sounds like you need to change your seed mix,why buy it if their not going to eat it.Stick with the millets and canary seed and no added black seeds as you don't have the types of birds that do eat it.Aussie finches wont eat canola seed but some English finches do.
I've tried it soaked/sprouted and it was a total waste of time. Craig

We used to sprout it and feed it to our canaries when they were feeding young. They loved it. May be a problem with the seed if it's not sprouting.

Mainly for cup-nesters, esp sprouted.

I sprout mine for my Canaries, after soaking it for 8 hours and leaving it over night it has chitted then put into the fridge to slow down the sprouting.

Canola is definately for canaries, goldfinches. And possibly other cup nesters that I have not tried. They go for it first, and will chuck other seed everywhere to get to it. Some even say it is the best breeding conditioner for them.

My canaries love Canola. They have it in their staple seed on the cage - 3 parts canary to 1 part canola, sprouted on a daily basis with their eggfood and in a tonic seed mix. Always get eaten and sprouts as well.

Some people have been talking about the genetically modified canola seed that has not been sprouting. I am not sure about this as I have only heard other people discussing. Mine in fine.

I tend to agree with the with the GM theory. I was only enquiring as to what is this seed. I dont wish to change my supplier because nearly all of the seeds do sprout. 20 kgs for for $19. I have been buying for the past 2 yrs. Only been the last 2 or 3 where the canola made its appearance. Next time I buy will ask about what the go is .

Ken don't ask them about it,tell them you don't want the canola in the mix as your birds wont eat it,mate your the customer. Craig
