Just wondering how most of you are catching your birds in an aviary environment. I had one gouldian breeder tell me he just catches them by hand as gouldians are not particularly quick.

What about the other breeds? Nets? Traps? Hand? Other?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks vettepilot_6 and SamDavis. I was hoping there was single magical way to attract the finches to just come and fly onto my hand..... Guess not.

I like the use of the door lock Sam..not sure I can convince the wife to let me pull apart the car door to use the lock but certainly worth a try.

Cheers,

Net for me preferably not against the wire as to minimize any potential of damage to the bird. As for catching by hand, the aviary must be very small or the birds are in cabinets ? You need to have a system that is the least stressful for the bird.In a larger aviary it would be impracticable to catch them with a net.

When Im looking to catch a particular bird I will do it with a net. Once Im in the aviary the birds generally take off in all directions but will settle down. Once Ive located the bird I want I try to keep track of where it lands after a couple of times of being disturbed. Ive found that most of my birds will generally have favoured landing areas. I use this to my advantage and work out the best "swing and catch" to ensure minimal stress on all the aviary inhabitants.

Ive found the smaller birds to be pretty agile with Double bars and OB's really making me work even after working out which landing area they like.

Go to eBay and search for remote central locking kit. You need to get a kit that includes the solenoid actuators. The kit I got came with 4 actuators (for 4 doors) but I only used 2 for my large aviary. You'll also need a 12 volt power source - I have power in the aviary so I used an old transformer from some busted appliance but I know others have used 12 volt batteries.
