Does anyone know anything about a talk that Dr Mike Cannon (Avian Vet) is doing in either September or October? I thought I saw something advertised about a talk titled 'Preparing for the upcoming breeding season', but I haven't been able to locate the ad. I know that Mike will be the guest of honour at the annual dinner for the Canary & Caged Bird Federation of Australia next weekend, but I thought that there was going to be a second talk. Maybe it was an old ad that I saw.

Thanks
Suzanne

I know Dr Mike Cannon gave a lecture at The Border Fancy Canary Club of Australia last year on 3/9/2103, and I had put up a notice on AFF for the meeting.

The lecture was very interesting in a PowerPoint format and he was happy to answer questions after the lecture. I have been trying to obtain a copy of his PowerPoint presentation, however, have not had a response to 2 emails.

The thing that stood out to me as a Canary breeder is the difference between the size of Birds testes and ovaries when in full breeding condition and prior to the breeding season. He mentioned that they increase in size by up to 5 times in full breeding condition. The main influence is hours of daylight. This the reason that canary breeders that try to start too early without artificial lighting and heating have so many clear eggs, as the birds testes have not developed fully.

I usually pair up on 15th September each year, and have fertility of approximately 60%. Last year I paired up 3 weeks later on 7 October as I was overseas, and my fertility rate was 69%. With around 200 eggs each year, that was an additional 18 chicks.

I do not know of any lecture that he is giving this year, not to say that he isn't giving a lecture at another club or venue.
