Hi,

We are visiting my brother in Melbourne in a few days. Apart from the zoo and Healesville Sanctuary, what other bird related things should I see? I may have only a few hours away from family duties to do this but would be interested in finding the best bird shop(s) in the city. We live in Singapore so supplies are hard to get and I am thinking of stocking up on a few things, perhaps.

Cheers

Andrew

I asked a similar question a while ago.

Btw: if you can bring your parrot-finches as carry-on luggage. I'll meet you in Melbourne ;-)

I'd like to see the aviary within the Melbourne Museum sometime when I'm in Melbourne. I think someone said it's called "Forest Secrets" or "Forest Gallery". I think one of the museum staff was on AFF at some stage or was it some facebook finch site? Maybe someone who has actually visited can tell us if it's worth a visit.

From what I have seen online of the collection at the museum it is well worth visiting. More for softbills rather than finches.

Thanks for the suggestions. We went to the museum and the forest/aviary is quite nice. Probably realistically populated with birds rather than having a higher density than what you could expect naturally. My 1 year old son enjoyed the satin bower bird displaying near his bower only a foot away. Of course the museum has other interesting exhibits. Ian, I know you are joking of course... Because you would know there is no way I could have young pintails ready after such a short time!

I'll definitely have to get to the museum next time I'm in Melbourne.

I've seen superb blue wrens, redbrows, diamond firetails and brown quail as well as the bowerbirds.
