I see some mentions recently of cod liver oil.
Many years ago I seem to remember a famous English Gouldian breeder visiting our shores. He suggested that this product had its inherent risks.
Can someone ( especially veterinary or scientific) allay my concerns, shed some light on this? Is there a better alternative?
I used to use vetemul or ovidol back in the dinosaur days!!
For the few birds I have, I have not bothered with anything of this nature.
Cheers
Tom

Hey
I still use it in the cooler months,I mix only half a tea spoon to about 500 grams of sprouted seed and the birds, finches & parrots love it .I only give it to the birds 1 or 2 times a week and only enough for them to be able to polish it off within a few hours as it could go rancid. Its the only thing I mix into my sprouted seed mix other than a multi vitamin [ornithon].

Perhaps I might invest in some for the winter.

Ovidol and Vetemol were great Products I must say, pity that a manufacturer today wont look into it and revive it again. I am using Cod liver Oil on a
regular basis and have experienced no adverse affects.

I used to use ovidol then,I think, later I got vetemul. Yes, Kentucky, they were great products and I don't think they went rancid as quickly as cod liver oil can (?)

Cod liver oil is most beneficial for our birds in the winter time
no worries about going rancid,I find it to be safe and it will definatley help to keep them warm
plus there are other benefits to be had that comes with feeding cod liver oil.

I wouldnt be surprised if we are using codliver oil or part of it in the current oils on the market. In fact i am reasonably sure codliver oil is blended into atleast one oil that I know of on the market. If not more oils. I still use codliver oil over winter and only take the seed (husk) out once eaten.
