Has anyone had experience transporting birds interstate? Is it risky? Insurance? Costs? Etc. Any comments appreciated.

Freighting birds is easy, hardest part is getting to the airport and sorting a light enough (timber)box.
If it is an Australian specie you will most likely need an import/export permit.
Non Australian no permit needed. (into W.A check)
Qantas freight will assist. Cost depends on size and weight of box and destination.
Capitol city to capitol city should be under $100 (at times dearer than a person)
Also make sure you check what time they are required at the airport.

WA requires an import/export permit for all birds,Native or foreign. They have strict laws regarding bird seed with imported birds from other States of which has to be removed before you can pick up your birds from the Airport. They also take photographs of the birds for identification before you pick them up.
They also require a copy of the export permit from the Breeders State again, Native or Foreign. Won't be long before we need a Visa/passport to enter WA ourselves

Hi rob, I bought birds recently from qld, cost $300 altogether for a door-to-door service (would of only been $230 if i already had a freight box), pickup from seller's house and dropped off at my door in melbourne. Was very easy, and I don't mind paying the extra for convenience! They didn't offer any insurance but I understood it was sent at my own risk. As long as you put some food in the box for them to eat on their journey, you should be fine (ie., pupae maggots, endive for water content, etc). Feel free to pm me for details of the freight company if you like

I don't think that forum management has any objections to mentioning names of companies who provide good service . .Perryheslop wrote:Feel free to pm me for details of the freight company if you like![]()
Or bad service for that matter
All good product info for members . . . part of what forums are about
