Can anybody tell me for both double bars and blackhearts if it's only the male that will do the mating call songs. I'm trying to separate 2 pairs of doublebars from fighting and trying to my verify blackheart pair. I think The Blackheart that supposed to be a hen was singing??
I separated 2 double bars that looked like hens but were behaving like aggressive cocks. The separated db was calling to another in the other cage but weren't mating calls just normal tweets??
Any sexing advice is also welcomed

Double bars will call out to each other if separated , defiantly only the males will sing in both cases. I have found it to be rare to have a double bar sing but others may have other opinions . like Craig has said , a pic will help , from the front showing the bib od the black heart as they are the easiest of them to sex generally by bib size and shape . A pic of the crowns (top of head ) of the DB will be best , what species of Double bar , black rump or white ? not that it makes a difference ..Pete

I don't reckon you can sex these birds beyond any doubt by appearance but I have some photos any way. They are bloody hard to photograph because they won't keep still and only have a mobile phone.

This is what I'm interested in more info.
If I'm sneaky enough, sometimes I have heard the mating call when they were all together. When I separated doublebar 4 from the other 3, it started chirping to the doublebar with red ring and vice-versa. This was normal chirping though and not the mating call song.

My question is , what is your intention ? do you want to separate so you know who is breeding etc . I had better success with Db in a colony 2 to 3 pr , you may have a dominate pair , but with different leg rings records are easy to keep , then separate if needed. They are hard in one way , just to get a compatible pair but persistence pays off .

The black heart with the purple leg ring looks like a hen , red leg ring a cock bird , is there more than a pr in these pics ?

the double bars are to hard unless viewed from the top . I have been trying to find some pics I took a while back for reference , but unabale to find at this point in time .. Pete

No idea of the double bars but you have two cock longtails going by the bib size/shape and crown colour imo. Craig

I had to separate the doublebars because 2 were fighting badly. 1 in particular is a savage little prick. The other was even bleeding.
It's not by my choice to separate.
As you all can see, you can't sex beyond doubt from appearance (it's not any easier looking at them in person) these birds. I need to sex from behaviour and song etc.
The birds are all labelled 2 blackhearts 4 doublebars

Update: after hrs watching like a statue, doublebar 1 and 4 I think are cocks. They were the fighters and I saw both singing mating songs. Both also have smallish heads (not boofheads) and are less white with normal (not thick or prominent) neck rings. In other words look how a hen should look in comparison to the one with a red ring. The red ringed has a boofhead, bolder neck bar and is whiter.
I think the green ring is a hen and I'm not sure about the red ringed yet.
Appearance tells nothing I reckon.
Not sure on blackhearts either but I too am thinking 2 cocks atm although the pink rings bib is clearly bigger.

I thought this place was full of experts?? But nobody can tell me for both double bars and blackhearts if it's only the male that will do the mating call songs.
