After 2 dud clutches one of my canary hens has hatched out babies.
So far 5 eggs 4 babies and I can hear the last baby chipping away inside the egg.
So far so good

Looks like the last chick hatched, I didnt want to disturb them too much as they were sleeping but I couldnt see any egg shell anywhere. All the babies have white feathers sticking out at all angles, they are that ugly they are cute!
Dad looks like he's doing the right thing also, feeding the hen and the chicks. He's very gentle with the babies.

Just convinced my mom canary that it was time she let me see what is happening in her 2nd nest. Still 4 unhatched eggs, but bub no 1 has arrived.
1st nest she only laid one egg and it was a dead in shell
Middling fertitlity last year so subjected them both to the indignity of feather trimming round the vent this year. He is a very heavily feathered double buff crested yellow gloster and she is a normal cinnamon. Could have stuffed a pillow with the down i trimmed off him if he had just been a bigger bird.
That's why I like the cinnamon fines the feathers down and it is so hard to get a canary that isn't buff or double buff these days. Yes they do look good and don't suffer as much from the cold but it can interfere with fertillity.

The last baby canary to hatch didnt make it, poor thing.
But on a brighter note here is a pic I managed to sneak while mum was busy feeding herself.
