GENETICS: AM I OVERTHINKING ??????

i was sitting outside today watching this yrs born gouldians as they color up, trying to get a ruff idea on which birds to keep and which to sell.

plus possible pairs for next yrs breeding season.

anyway, i have a YH/PB/SFY HEN that i bred last yr and i would like to try and bred her to produce some DFY Cocks, so i wrote down that i needed to buy a YH/PB/ SFY COCK, i then thought what if i cant find a Yellow head cock, what color SFY would i then like to breed with her. black or red???

i then realized if i had a different colored head cock bird then my hen would realize and produce more cocks, due to the recent discovery that hens have a role in determining the sex of the clutch if the head color of the cock bird is different to her own, hence increasing my chances of males which could mean more DFY COCKS.

i think that makes sense in theory, what do others think???

the pic at the bottom is of my SFY HEN

My understanding is that hens are just yellow not SF or DF

So putting her with a YH SF (visually dilute green) male should produce
25% Male >> Orange (Head) - Purple (Chest) - DF Yellow (Body)
25% Male >> Orange (Head) - Purple (Chest) - SF Yellow (Body)
25% Female >> Orange (Head) - Purple (Chest) - Yellow (Body)
25% Female >> Orange (Head) - Purple (Chest) - Green (Body)

If you put her with a YH DF (visually yellow) male they should produce
50% Male >> Orange (Head) - Purple (Chest) - DF Yellow (Body)
50% Female >> Orange (Head) - Purple (Chest) - Yellow (Body)

If you use a RH SF (visually dilute green) male
25% Male >> Red / Orange (Head) - Purple (Chest) - DF Yellow (Body)
25% Male >> Red / Orange (Head) - Purple (Chest) - SF Yellow (Body)
25% Female >> Red / Orange (Head) - Purple (Chest) - Yellow (Body)
25% Female >> Red / Orange (Head) - Purple (Chest) - Green (Body)

If you use a RH DF (visually yellow) male
50% Male >> Red / Orange (Head) - Purple (Chest) - DF Yellow (Body)
50% Female >> Red / Orange (Head) - Purple (Chest) - Yellow (Body)

If you use a BH SF (visually dilute green) male
25% Male >> Red / Black / Orange (Head) - Purple (Chest) - DF Yellow (Body)
25% Male >> Red / Black / Orange (Head) - Purple (Chest) - SF Yellow (Body)
25% Female >> Black / Orange (Head) - Purple (Chest) - Yellow (Body)
25% Female >> Black / Orange (Head) - Purple (Chest) - Green (Body)

If you use a BH DF (visually yellow bodied with white head) male
50% Male >> Red / Black / Orange (Head) - Purple (Chest) - DF Yellow (Body)
50% Female >> Black / Orange (Head) - Purple (Chest) - Yellow (Body)

As long as you are prepared for the split head colours in the babies, using a different head colour might help you get more male DF babies, all you need to do now is decide how split you want them..... and you thought all your decisions were over....... :D

Let us know what you decide to do.

Yellow hen's are SF(single factor) cause she carries the single yellow gene, which she received from her SFY father(dilute). cause she can only carry 1 gene, hence SFY hen.

thanks for the % of young i may get with the differnt breeding, i may try getting a RH Dilute cock to pair with her and see what i get. it depends on what i can buy.

il keep everyone posted on what happans

I see your logic but I don't think there has been any conclusive evidence regarding the ration of hens to cocks when it comes to the yellow headed birds.

I stand corrected
Ive reread my genetics 101... and my theory (and Im sticking to it :D ) is that we are both right. ;)
A hen can only ever be SF(your explanation) so she can only ever be yellow (my explanation)....does that make sense? :?

hi matt,

i might try and contact someone who is big on gentics or someone from Save the gouldian fund reseach and ask if they know if the same applys to yellow head hens determining head color.

next yr compared with my last 2 breeding seasons i will be housing only same head colored birds. so i have 2 avaires, 1 with red heads colony breeding and my 2nd avairy with black headed birds. then im breeding my yellow pairs in my breeding cabinets and cages.

so will c wat happans.
