I have a pair of RFP and the hen has about seven eggs (I think) under her at the moment and spends most of the time in the nest (the male just eats and flys around all day) but she has been in there for three or even closer to four weeks. I would have thought that there would have been some action by now so I'm thinking they may be duds. Can anyone advise on how long would be considered normal for the hen to sit and if they are duds should I remove them or just let her run out natural instince and continue sitting. My only issue is whether say five are duds and there may be two later ones that could be fertile?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

The eggs should hatch 11/12 days from the last egg laid.
After 4 weeks the eggs should not only hatch but the chicks would be getting ready to fledge.
While 7 eggs is not a massive number for a clutch see what the next one numbers if it is 7 or more check to see if you have two hens and not a true pair .This is unlikely but you never know.
Male Blue faced P/F's don't assist with incubation but male Red Face do and will come and go incubating and feeding.
When eggs are first laid there shell is slightly translucent, as the chick forms the shell will change to a chalky white but infertile eggs don't.

Thanks for the info. I am confident I have a pair as they have had chicks before (three but one did not survive). She seems to be very content to sit in the nest even when I go into the aviary and am only half a meter away she does not come out and the cock does not go in very much. I tried to look in the nest but it is a wicker nest and she has built it such that the opening is onlt about the size of a ten cent coin. Guess I will just wait and see what happens.

With 7 eggs, it's already a week after the first one is laid before she'll start to sit, may be a busy few days coming up.
