I got this pic today of my painteds building a nest, but instead of grass and featers they are building it out of small sticks and bark, has anyone else had this happen.

mine always start their nest with big stuff like that, even lumps of charcoal or cuttlefish and stones then they seem to move onto the softer stuff like coconut fibre, pampas grass and feathers

The ones i have had,use sticks charcoal etc. and nesting material. That amount though is extreme. It may be because of the type nest you suplied, has captured the material. In brush etc it falls out of the brush and onto the ground.

Greg, next time you make those nests try putting a layer of coconut fibre on the inside (cheap as chips sells them for $2 meant to be for pot plants lol). I have found that my birds prefer for some reason not to be able to see out of their new nest from the moment they move in.

that is how I get all my coconut fibre. just pull the things apart and chuck it into the aviary. the birds use as much as I make available
