Eggs.

Hello Everyone,
I have both a RH pair and a YH pair who have taken to the same nest, resulting in 11 eggs. Since putting up another 'L' shaped nesting box a few days ago, the YH pair have now moved and have claimed it. Happy Houses. ( for some reason none of my 3 pairs liked the standard finch 'budgie' boxes i put up ) I am thinking that now 11 eggs will be too much for a pair to sucessfully hatch out, resulting in a very poor number getting to the hatching stage.

Any advice and thoughts appreciated!

If the YH hen has already laid some eggs it means she would probably lay less in the new nest. Possible outcome..... less hatchlings in the new nest and possible deaths in the "old nest"

You could try moving some of the eggs across to the newly accepted nest as the YH pair would have contributed to the 11 eggs somewhere along the line. Possible outcome..... However you do run the risk of either nest desertion by either pair.

Or you could leave things as they are and accept what happens.

Are all the eggs a nice chalky white or are some a pinkish clear color?

The eggs are a nice ivory colour though i didnt really take any further notice to see if they were a pinkish clear colour. I take it this is a stage in the eggs development?. I moved three over to the YH house, there's now 5 eggs in there now. The pairs seem settled.

The BH parents are doing well with their 5 young, roughly a week old now. A joy to listen to their 'baby talk'. I disposed of the last egg, cracked it and discovered a dried chick who didnt make it. Theres also a newly laid egg. I am thinking of removing it.

Bear in mind, unless you know the genetics behind your pairs you wont be sure which young belongs to which parents. For these clutches anyway.

True Diane, thats the least of my thoughts, I am a novice, my first Gouldians so its all a learning experience and exciting having them become parents after only having them for a month or so.

Beware of the finch fever
This time next year you will have more aviaries, birds and have a list of wanted finches!

The Finch Fever!

Over the weekend i was just thinking out loud that i will be needing a bigger aviary, or at least a second one. Will come in handy also and practical!

Other half says NO! Come Spring, i will have another aviary! (( if not before ) lol

Definately going to need another avairy, and more finches. Just start telling him/her you want an avairy or finches every time it is your aniversary, birthday, christmas or any other excuse you can come up with. And you will wear him/her down. Of course you could try giving him/her their own pair of finches.
