has anyone got any experience with californian quail mixed with finches?
any personal advice would be much appreciated.

I and several others have found Californian Quail an absolute disaster.
The birds didn't attack anything but when scared they headed for the dry brush in the shelter and in their panic would destroy nests ands in general cause the other birds to leave eggs or young and also panic adult birds. They will climb unlike King Quail etc.
