I first kept finches over 20 years ago for about 10 years. Pulled my aviary down to do house extensions and addition of a workshop and then never rebuilt the aviary. I have breed nearly all the Australian finches at one time or another. Made a new finch aviary a couple of years ago to hold just a couple of finches for a nice look in the garden. Then I created a small parrot aviary near the BBQ just for athetics. Then came another 'bank" of aviaries to house my increasing population of parrots. The "bug" had returned. Now I'm geting rid of most of my parrots and returning to the finch fold with a couple of Rosa Bourkes to keep the wife happy. At the moment have a couple of Fawn Zebras, and a pair of Java Sparrows. These were the "nice looking ones for the garden. I now intend to get some Tri Coloured Nuns (which I am finding hard to source around here), tri-coloured parrot finches and haven't worked out what else to get yet.
For those of you who don't know Orange is abit like Canberra on the weather front. Ranging form below freezing in the winter to above boiling in the summer, so the birds have to be strong and healthy to live here.

I've rambled enough now so hopefully talk to some of you at some stage in the future.

Thanks MickP. At this stage Wattle Aviaries and Ace Colony Aviaries in Sydney seem OK. As the Sydney region is not as cold as the Orange region I would prefer to get the birds locally or I suppose Canberra would'nt be too bad either. I'm in no rush so we'll see what happens !

Thanks again

Welcome. Nothing wrong with the tougher finches like Zebs and Javas, I have both and love them. Good luck with getting both types of Tri's. Just remember that Java's and Tri nuns are related and a mistake in sexing could mean cross breeding.

Thanks finchbreeder. I didn't realise that they were that closely related where they may cross breed. Will definitely keep my eye on that one!
