After the earthquake on Friday night I had to go out to one of the aviaries as a few birds seemed to be moving about the cage, banging into the wire. Got them all settled down and everything seemed ok. Now I see the OB hen is holding one of her wings a lot lower, and on closer inspection I can see a swelling poking through the feathers. She is still flying around and feeding, she just holds her wing lower.

It rattled the panels of wood under the eaves of the house.
At first I thought it was the wind, but I think the birds must have felt something earlier too as I had to go out twice that night before the quake because I heard birds moving about.

Don't worry Deb you're fairly safe. I think arounf Kathrine (NT) is the most unstable area and there hasn't been a volcanic eruption in about 4000 years in Australia. Just take pitty on those poor bastards that live on the "rim of fire" (oh that's me!). Actually the worst we've had since I came in 2004 was a 3.2 since last year and it had no effects on my aviaries or the birds that I can discern.

I would agree that animals know earlier about the quakes. Late last year the ones around here i had noticedour 3 Alpacas acting weird and then the tremmers hit i was in the kitchen and then the rush of noise pushed thru.
Hope all is well.

That's why they used to take canaries down the mines. Birds sense things before we do. I've been in a cave too Deb
knew nothing about either of these quakes. Hope your OB comes good Diane. My RH Gouldian whose wing was hanging very badly in now back flying arround, though still a little tentative, about flying over 1mtr distances. The wing is almost back to it's normal position. Glad I live in WA, think we are in a pretty safe area.

Me too, Im not worried about the look of the wing hanging down even if it never looks any different. As long as she isnt in pain and can get about the aviary to feed. Im more concerned about the swelling on the joint. Without stressing her even more by catching her Im just going by how it looks and it looks like the joint of the wing.finchbreeder wrote:Hope your OB comes good Diane.

This is the best pic and can get of her with the nodule showing on the wing. You can just see the pink coloured spot.
