I have fed Madira Cake for years, for some reason Herbert Adams cake was favoured.
When it became unavailable I then made my own using the cheap packet mixes and adding poppy seed and the shells.
These days I use Sarah Lee PLAIN POUND CAKE as I feel it is better.
The reason is that it has a high oil content and the breeding birds use it to feed their chicks in particular first light.
It also doesn't go hard but staying reasonably soft for well over a week.
Because it is hard to locate in super markets I get it from their own clearance stores.
I can buy it in cartons of 12 at around $2 each.($24c) I have a small chest freezer and load it.
To give you some idea of its popularity each year I buy inexcess of 20 cartons(240) mind you I have a number of Finches as well.

Cheers for that i will look into it. I just bought the sarah lee brand for now and made it last night. Looking forward into seeing if the birds took to it today.

Is that the same cake you made me eat.... it was yummy as... hopefully you didn't put any bird stuff in it lol...
I might make one too I'm in a baking mood.. i like the idea of putting anything and everything in it hehe
Question though...

when you put mealworms in it obviously they would die in the baking process, do the birds still eat them then??? or do you just sprinkle them live on top after the cake is baked as an icing
