Hi everyone! I have been interested in finches over the last 3-4 years.
3yrs ago I purchased 3pairs of gouldians (2 sets of red heads plus a pair of red headed pastels) I had great success with the red heads. 3 fully fledged babies and parents went straight back into breeding. During the second round of nesting all pairs were nesting and the pastels were incubating 5 fertile eggs. Then over a period of 2weeks I was hit by 3 snakes (2 brown tree snakes and a small carpet snake) and my whole flock was inialated.
I am starting to gain back some interest, however I wont be purchasing any new stock until I have build a new snake/mice proof encloser.
I was thinking of using 5mm square wire over 1 inch or 1 1/2 inch weld mesh.
As well as a proliferation of eletric fencing along perimeter and side of cages.
regards
Klint
Finches of course!

Welcome and good luck. Proper finch wire sounds like a good idea if you are in a snake prone area. See some most years here, but have not lost more that a couple of fledglings off the ground to them in a year, fortunately.

Welcome to the forums, great people with a common interest and heaps of advice and suggestions.
Just a thought regarding your snake situation, have you thought about getting some 'bird' netting ( the stuff gardeners throw over their fruit trees to stop birds from eating the produce )? My step-mother lives on the farm and in summer, places it around stratigic places near her front and side verandahs to help stop the snakes from getting on, and under her house.... they get caught..... prevented from saying much else from there on in....
My suggestion is perhaps placing this around the back of the aviary or of your choosing.
Ive got roof lazer light up the sides of my aviary... to keep the draughts out. In fact, majority of my aviary is covered with a cheap tarp thrown over the open section. Most days lately, it hasnt come off. The winds been a little strong and cold mornings. Trying to keep the heat in....

Hi- I live in a snake a raptor country! I highly recommend using 5mm wire and putting up a 1 m skirting around your whole aviary. Should keep the nasties out! Good luck!
