Two of my Black Throats seem crook.........

Symptoms: one eye seems a bit gluey/irritated. One bird is quite fluffed up this morning, the other is not so bad but not as sleek as the other 5 birds. I must admit I noticed this eye irritation in one of the birds earlier in the week & figured it might have been poked in the eye during over-zealous mutual preening :?

They're all still in a holding cage inside having served 3 weeks in quarantine & ready to fly next monday

I've just put Oxy B in their water.....its all I had in the way of anti-biotics

I wormed them with Wormout Gel 10 days ago and put Moxidectin in their water 3 weeks ago. Only things I've done recently is brought them off an austerity diet and given them regular chitted(sprouted) seed and greens........I cheated with the first lot & didnt put any domestos or Virkon S in

Hospital cage will arrive this arv........anyone got any good ideas as to a diagnosis/medication/treatment

Sounds like you have done what you can with what you have. You didn't mention cage temp put a lamp near cage to keep temp up until hospital cage arrives.Give electrolytes and watch for dehydration.

Eye could be off perch if quarantine cage is small and a few birds in it for 3 weeks? Moving to hospital cage of the lot for a day and clean or replace all perches in quarantine cage could be the go.

Not that you'd want it to be, but in parrots they can have a form of Clamydia (Psitticossis) that can show as an eye infection, particullaly prevalent in Quarrions. The usual treatment with Doxycycline and an eye ointment, noesporin or golden eye ointment from the chemist. I think the neosporin needs a script, but should be able to get it if you tell them it is for vetinary purposes.

The bird with the crook eye it may have some husk or dirt in its eye, you can use Terramycin Pinkeye Powder it is a broad spectrum antibiotic in a Puffer Pack for eye infections of animals. Puff powder into affected eyes 2-3 times daily. Terramycin is also useful for bacterial wound contamination.Ive used it on finches before.

For the other birds that are sick they need to kept in an hospital box ,When I get sicks birds I keep them around 25 degrees, give them Spark Liquid Concentrate it is a blend of body salts and readily absorbed energy in a liquid format. Ideal for supporting birds during transportation or in times of stress. Provides energy and electrolytes...
The birds may have worms I would treat them with Moxidectin or they may have COCCIDIOSIS the bug itself is ingested from the environment; it's tough outer shell is ground down in the gizzard and little worm like creatures invade cells in the gut wall of the bird.
There they multiply, burst out of the cells, causing damage to the gut wall, and bury into more cells of the gut to multiply again. After a few complex reproduction stages they produce eggs (oocyts), which are shed back into the environment in the birds faeces, thus, starting the whole cycle over. The reproduction cycle is fairly fast and extremely effective, producing many, many new oocysts from a single ingested one.
I treat Cocci with Baycox
I hope this helps

Thanks guys, this is really helpful.....

So far they're still going, I have the lamp on next to the holding cage......there's a hold up with the hospital cage  ......the eyes seem irritating, the birds are scratching, wiping and asking others to be preened around their eye....presumeably for some relief.

I was going to use Moxidectin again.....I thought it could be a mite maybe??.......What do you guys reckon about using Moxi, an anti biotic and an electrolyte all at the same time?

One at a time, as with people, some medications can react with each other, so better to be safe than sorry.

I use the Moxi 5 mls per litre of water for worms,a little bit of brown sugar to sweeten the water and give them Vetafarm spark ,liquid electrolytes/carbs together straight away as you have to give the birds energy straight away to fight their illness .

Thanks for asking....

Been pretty busy, two more Black throats developed the same symptoms :o ......I got hold of the Terramycin....but in an aerosol spray......no powder form available for another month.....I've been appying it to their eyes & surrounds with my finger dipped in the stuff.........I also got Sulpha-D for Coccidiosis.......I decided to give it to everyone.......this has worked a treat ;) .....the three BTs are really coming along...........I did lose a WE Mask last night though......though not the same symptoms, it was injured and probably also suffering from overcrowding in their holding cage

Roof is done, got some wire & doors to hang, then they can all stretch their wings.....this weekend's weather looks OK.......9-20
