How do you tell male from female?

I looked up on a site and it said that you cant tell be the colours, you tell by thier singing!. it says the females are quiet and chirp and the males have a loud chirp and dance like a mating dance. well my two finch's both are quite but i hear a loud tune like song every now and then, but i cant tell i they both are doing it or not.

Is this information correct that i searched?

that's true, the best way is their singing.

What I do is I stand or sit inside the aviary (but sitting/standing out in front of a cage works too) and after a while they start to ignore me if I'm VERY still and quiet. they go on about their buisness and eventually one may sing. I did this with double bars with a 60% correct-a-mundo-ness!!!
I'm sure there are better ways though...
