Hi all!

I was checking out parasite and mite control when I came across some information relating to "natural" control of these critters.

I use wormers, moxidectin etc and am not suggesting to replace these. But what I was wondering is if any one uses "natural" control, by this I mean supplementing the Finch diet with some or any of the following seeds. I'm still learning...

Carica Papaya
Carrot Seeds
Cayene
Cloves
Fennel
Garlic (I've read elsewhere that this is ok in small doses but onion and garlic are toxic to birds??)
Ginger Root
Psyllium
Squash/ Pumpkin
Thyme
Wormwood

Just interested....Thanks

Dont know about any of the above , a lot of people recommend Garlic for just about anything that ails you but if you get into the nitty gritty of it Garlic can cause more harm than good.
I think the reason more people dont go for a more natural approach to worming their birds is because we are basically control freaks , we control just about every aspect of our birds environment which give us peace of mind in knowing we have given our birds every thing they need to be healthy and thrive.
Therefore by measuring out a precise amount of bird wormer we can then relax knowing our birds have been made parasite free .
Leaving such details to nature is way too hit and miss for us , and the cost of having their crap tested for parasites periodically just wouldnt be feasable.
So in this day and age the handy bottle of poison is the best and simplest way to treat our birds for worms however if someone works out the exact formula of easily attainable organic seeds and herbs that will guarantee to eradicate worms Ill be the first to try it.

have wormwood growing in my aviaries, parrot finches seem to enjoy it as a nest site while the emblemas use it as a nesting material.

Dunno about birds, but I have always wormed out my pigs with paddy melons that I pick up in the cultivation paddocks with great success.

Deb - usually it's pine melons that jam is made of, and paddy melons that are fed to the pigs cause they are unpalatable. They look similar to those who haven't been bought up in the country and seen them all their lives. So you probably haven't been "pigging" out.

Dubbo is country and we in NSW call them Paddies , lots of names are different between East and West in Oz . Yes they are inedible raw but stew up to be a nice jam .
