What is a safe way of disinfecting without poisoning the bird? I have pressure cleaned the aviary we just got but want to disinfect it to prevent cross infection. My other half said Dettol is safe. Are there any other stronger chemicals non toxic for the birds? thanks. :)

If the birds arn't in the aviary yet you can use bleach, if they are you could use Chlorhexadine, avalible from the chemist as Microshield 5 ( amoung others), can use upto 500ml/10ltrs.

No birds in there yet. What is the correct dilution for bleach?

Doesn't really matter when there are no birds, but the same you would use for household cleaning is fine. Bleach will disapate fairly well in sunlight so after a day or so it will be pretty much gone, even if the smell is still there, it would be fairly harmless. If you are conserned, hose it off after a day or so.

Yep bleach then rinse rinse rinse and full sun for a few days , I do this when pulling down aquariums and it has never hurt the fish when they go back into the tanks so I doubt it will harm the birds.
Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.
