Looks like a hen to me, although it's got a good strong yellow belly, I don't think that it would be a lilac cock.

It looks to me as a good quality hen.
I have white Breasted Gouldian hens very much like the bird in the photo.

Thanks explains why the abundance of eggs for 2 breeding seasons and no young , no preening each other , no singing but a squark noise , no nest building .
Thanks folks it all adds up now.

I thought I read somewhere that the red tip of the beak is a sign of a cock ready to mate??? but I have been into finches all of 5 minutes so take what I say with a pinch of salt!

Likewise not being into Gouldian's for all that long but now having 22 of them I would be guessing a Hen, just based on what some of mine look like.

Body colour says cock bird chest looks hen.
This might sound weird but possibly a hermaphrodite finch, have a read of this article http://www.abc.net.au/science/news/stories/s818157.htm
I think I remember correctly Dr Tony Gestier, Vetafarm, saying he had to surgically sex a asiatic parrot recently which looked a cock?? but with a hen coloured beck??. .
Reminds me of a hit 70s song famous verse "looked like women talked like a man" Hint The Kinks.
