Sorry about the non -finch question, but any ideas on how to stop a budgie from laying eggs? She laid her first egg today, we have had her about 3 years, they dont have a box and we aren't super keen for them to breed.

Their cage is 1m x 1m x .5m.

They are happy in their cage and dont really want to put them in a smaller cage

I think you'll find a smaller cage won't make a difference if they want to lay eggs they will it is natural.Don't supply a nest box and just remove eggs. Modifying diet will stop them from laying but to the detriment of the birds..

agreed remove the eggs , some would say to give them plastic eggs to fuss over , tried it with a overproductive quarrion once but she knew they werent real and continued laying in the corner of the cage ...
Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.

Yeah they are on a fairly basic diet as it is, seed, grit and greens once or twice a week.

Removing the eggs isn't a problem, she actually dropped the first once.

You won't stop a budgie from laying nest or no nest, just let it keep going, they generally only lay about twice a year when their is no nest. Keep it on a plain seed diet with minimal other food & it shouldn't lay again in a hurry.
