The way I plant is what ever I clean off the floor or waste from the seed cleaner go's into the patch and what grows, grows and usually have various seed heads all year round.

Very random here also , just chuck it ( scrap seed )somewhere your not going to mow and let nature do the rest .

I have a plant pot with some wire over the top (stop the wild birds getting at it) outside each aviary and the waste seed goes in there along with the waste water whatever grows through the mesh goes in the aviary and another plant pot is started.
I also have a little plastic greenhouse (from the cheap shop :D ) I cut down 3 litre milk cartons and put handfulls of seed in them and grow them on for the birds to have a go at. I do the normal millet, red panic and a black mix, which is linseed, rape and niger.

I did try a full garden bed with nice organized patches of different seed, next morning it was all over the place  the wild birds had a party
