HI DOES ANYONE KNOW ANY BREEDERS THAT COULD SELL ME BIRDS ON A REGULAR BASIS WHAT IM HOPEING TO DO IS HAVE A BIRD EXCHANGE AN SALES THE IDEA BEHIND THIS IS PEOPLE WANTING TO GET INTO THE MORE EXPENSIVE TYPES OF FINCHES.CAN TRADE WHAT BIRDS THEY MAY HAVE SURPLUS AS A PART OR ALL OF PAYMENT FOR BIRDS THEY ARE TRYING TO ADD TO THEIR AVAIRY. IM NOT WANTING TO BUY SPECIES THAT REQUIRE REGESTRATION WITH PARKS AN WILDLIFE OUR NATIVE FINCHES. MUTATIONS OF OUR NATIVE SPECIES AN ALL FORIGEN FINCHES ONLY. IN MY AERA WE DO NOT HAVE THAT BIG OF SELETION OF THESE BIRDS IM LOOKING FOR. AN YOUNGTERS WANTING TO ADD TO THEIR AVAIRYS BY HAVEING THIS EXCHANGE OF LESSER VALUE BIRDS FOR BIRDS THAT ARE SOMETIMES OUT OF THEIR PRICE RANGE WOULD HELP THEM ACQUIRE THE BIRDS THEIR WANTING.I MYSELF HAVE KEEPT FINCHES SINCE I WAS 8 YEARS OLD AN IT WASNT TILL I WAS 16 I COULD AFFORD MY FIRST PAIR OF GOULDIANS AS AN APPRENTICE BRICKLAYER THEY COST ME 2 WEEKS WAGES THEN. KEEPING BIRDS SHOULD NOT ALWAYS BE ABOUT THE MONEY NO MATTER IF ITS BUDDGIES. PARROTS. FINCHES FOR AVICULTURE TO CONTINUE WE NEED TO ENCOURAGE YOUNGTERS LOOKING A PICTURES OF BIRDS ON THE COMPUTER DONT CUT IT GET INVOLVED AN THE REWARDS THEY CAN ACHEIVE BEING ABLE TO BREED BIRDS GOES WELL BEYOND THE MONEY VALUE OF BIRDS.

Hi Medusa,

Firstly, just a gentle tip – please don’t use all capital letters in your posts. It is very hard to read and usually in web land it indicates you are shouting….
As for prices, these are very much an indication of the availability of the species. It may also indicate how much time and money the breeder has spent on them.

Some species that are particularly rare and venerable to extinction in our aviaries (Orange-cheek Waxbills, Peter’s Twinspots) are deliberately kept high. That is because the people that breed them put so much time and money into their care they do not want to sell them to the first mug that comes along. They know that by selling them for +$2500 a pair only serious breeders with the correct setup will be interested in buying them.
As for surplus birds being part payment, many pet shops will still do this, but it takes a lot of birds! For example, when I was 10 I breed about 50 Zebs and swapped all 50 for 1 pair of Plumheads! Now days I think it would be 100 Zebs!

There are plenty of cheaper birds available for new and young breeders. But it’s like anything, you have to learn to walk before you run.
Work your way up the ladder – ie. Start with Zebs, Bengalese and Yellow Stars. Breed, breed, breed and after 1-2 years you have enough money to buy some Cordons, Ruddys, Red Face Parrot Finches. Breed, breed, breed for another 2-3 years and buy some Melbas, Aurora, Rufous Backed Manikins …after that the sky is the limit!

If you are serious about keeping finches you need to learn patience! We have all gazed at images of beautiful exotic finches and thought “Ah…if only”…but then either reality kicks in or your boss comes into the room so you have to get back to work! lol

Try not to get too frustrated, good things come to those that wait!

There is an old bloke on Cardiff Rd/Main Rd at Cardiff Heights (I think its number 12) he has a sign out the front. I think he is happy to trade/swap birds.

Iaos gave you a good seller of finches above ...( if its the same fella aza told me about he is reasonably priced ) from what I have been told Newie and the Hunter Valley have a lot of Finch breeders , you just need to tap into it by joining at least 1 Avicultural Society or Club and getting onto some breeders .
And just something Ive picked up on is that a lot of the more established breeders have a real hatred for pet shops or middle men , they prefer to sell straight out to other breeders .
Nice luxury for those with space to hold birds ..oh I wish .,
Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.

You paint a strange picture of John Barrett. I am sure he would be overjoyed with your description as would his wife and young daughters.
I have known John for quite some time and have no hesitation to recommend him as a supplier and I also call him a friend.
He has done well, particularly concidering the resistance and hurdles he has received from some of the older brigade
living in the Hunter Region.
The reason he doesn't handle the disposal of alot of my stock is the distance from his place and mine.
As for getting stock, you are up against Bird Sales,Dealers guarding their suppliers, friends asking for stock and so on.
I guess we could quadrupel our output(If we wanted to or could) and still find a market.
If you want to break into the area you need to join a good club and be patient, the Hunter branch is a great start,
There are some top breeders and smart people in that club well worth the membership fee.
By the way I wish I was 54 again and believe me I would be going full steam ahead.

69 minus 54=15.I wish I had started 15 yrs ago, I'm only into it in a small way but both my wife and myself enjoy every minute of it.
Cheers Greg.
