New to finch keeping and still trying to research which birds would be most suitable.
I plan on keeping Zebras to begin with as I gather by their numbers and cost that they're quite prolific. I would, however, like to keep birds which sing happy trills. My better half has recently been given two finches in a cage which hop around incessantly but only make a "beep" call. I have yet to learn my birds so I can't tell you what breed they are.
I have read of Green Singers and presume that they get their name because of their call. Which birds have the fanciest song? I appreciate that peoples opinions vary, but would value any input.
Thanks.

Yes Green singers have a quieter canary type song, There are quiet a few species that sing thou most are short and only done with gusto during breeding season, one of my favourites is the Tri Coloured Munia.

Cool, thank you. Another type of finch to research.
Is it breeding season now? As I heard some wonderful finch song outside of work yesterday. Amazing actually. I could hear him trilling through earmuffs whilst inside a noisy workshop. Must have been the higher frequency cutting through. There is wetland swampy type grasses outside and it's full of birds.

Breeding season is usually winter leading into spring but the way the seasons are going at the moment who knows? Not many birds breed in the heat of Summer. If you want a good book buy Russell Kingstons book/s (The finch bible as it is known in finch circles)

G'day Bosco, get us some pics & we'll give you a hand.
I'll take a wild stab in the dark with your piercing triller and suggest maybe a Song Lark???..........open paddock/grassland?......little brownish job about 8-10"??
Or Pied Butcherbirds have a pretty cool, forlorn song.
As for finches with a cool song, (apart from Canarys)......Blue Faced Parrot Finch.........the male performs an amazing trilling that hangs in the air.........worth about $60 a pair so not cheap for a rank beginner......otherwise not that hard to look after, plenty of green seeding grasses, clean water, good clean aviary, not a cage......very active bird.....very attractive...........

Great singers. The Canary of course, the Goldfinch, the Java Sparrow, the Cuban Melodious Finch. And provided your avairy is sufficently spacious you can keep all but the first 2 together. I do.

Another idea is to look up individual bird songs on you tube. Here is an example of the european goldfinch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V89-wTa6 ... re=related (over 2 million hits and growing)
