When I walked into my aviary today I was lucky enough to be greeted by the sounds of the first newborn gouldian chicks for 2011 :D Havent had a peek yet as the mum was in the nest box and I didn't want to spook her, there was 8 eggs in this nest so I'm hoping for 4-5 chickies to make it to the perch. I also have another pair on 8 eggs and one just starting on 2 eggs so 2011 is shaping for a good breeding season

I know exactly what you mean Roy! Even after breeding finches for so many years I still get butterflies in my tummy whenever I hear new chicks for the first time. I even get a big thrill from newly hatch king quails (like last Saturday - 6 in all!). Even though the birds do all the work, I still feel like a proud parent lol

Good luck Roy and well done

Yes we all love that sound. I was only saying this to my young bloke yesterday when doing the morning feed. Music to my ears!

Had my first peak inside the nest box today and was pleased to see seven healthy chicks :o Is it uncommon for a pair to successfully rear a nest of seven chicks? I had two lots of five last year and a few people said that five chicks is about the max for goulds.

A pair of mine last yr, laid 8 eggs, hatched 8 and fledged 8, record for me, usual clutch size 4-6, so 7 is possible, good luck

Well done, great clutch sizes. How many pairs of goulds do you have and how are they housed?
