Today we bought some young gouldians, mostly still uncoloured. There were bred in an aviary and instead of the usual nesting boxes, the nests consisted of long cardboard pipes with closed off ends and holes along the length. I have not seen anything like that before but the guy said his birds really liked it. I guess it replicates the notion of a hollow log.Just wondering if anyone else uses a similar nesting arrangement for gouldians, or what other arrangment outside of the traditional nesting boxes. The birds won't be breeding before Christmas so we have plenty of time to think about what to do.

Probably the cardboard rolls from in side carpet. Have used them. Not too bad. You can just bin them when they get messy and talk nice to the local carpet shop about the contents of their skip bin. Have seen them horizontal on the wall and vertical hanging from the roof. Prefer the latter.

Yes, that is what they were. He had them horizontal.

Interesting. If you really put some thought into it I think you could come up with a heap of nesting sites that would cost you zilch.

I have tried all sorts of nests, from little Zebra style boxes to boxes with 600mm of hollow log attached to them, to side entry step down boxes, and have not been able to identify a type of box which guarantees they will be chosen first or even used at all.

I went out of my way to get my Gouldians lots of choice nesting sights / nest boxes, gouldian boxes, home made tubes etc. They have chosen normal square little finch boxes. Go figure.

We have given ours 3 options - a spherical wicker nest similar to poohbears design, a "log" design made of gutter guard and filled with grasses and the traditional wooden nest box, and all 3 pairs have gone for the last option.

Our Gouldians nested in a basket similar to Po Bears but unfortunatly either fell out or were kicked out, they had three
different types of boxes to choose from.
Cheers Greg.
