Sean try contacting Just Finches magazine, they have run several articles on rare finches and may be able to put you in contact with someone :D

Or you can try asking Marcus at Clifton Finch Aviaries - The Tassy Finch club , he has a bit to do with rare finches as well :D

Hey mate
Chaffinches are available in Australia, but in low numbers. You can probably expect to pay around about $400 or so for a pair, and you'll have to look around for a while, probably in the more exclusive circles, before you'll be able to find any.
They were introduced into the wild in Australia, but unlike the goldfinch and greenfinch they failed to establish. There are no feral populations here but it is a very common introduced species in New Zealand.

Finch breeders whom may still breed the Chaffinch
My friend i think that the breeding of chaffinch is (not just quite) but very DIFICULt.I have two (wild) pairs for 7 years now, and two years ago one of them finally gave me two babes. They were in an aviary about 4 metres long (square)and a height of 2,5 metres ....ALONE.Well ,the fact is that even here (where i live ) is quite HOT for them...
nobody is perfect....im nobody :)

Chaffinch wrote:Hello, My name is Sean and live on Sydneys northern beaches area. I am wondering if anyone has any information regarding the European Chaffinch in Australia. I had heard they were introduced here by early European settlers but due to the climate never really took off and are restricted to southern Victoria in the wild??

Does anyone have any information on Finch breeders whom may still breed the Chaffinch? I would like to purchase a pair as domestic pets mainly due to childhood memories of them growing up in the Irish countryside..

Best regards to everyone'

Sean
Hi Sean

Have you had any luck tracking any down?

I sent out some emails a while ago in a search for Chaffiches with no success. It's a shame, I'm sure there are a couple in someone's aviary just no widely kept enough to establish them in oz.

I know a guy who said he was bringing some from NZ, but I couldn't tell if he was kidding or not, and haven't had a chance to ask him.

Don't even joke about bringing birds from New Zealand or any other country.
You should know the law, NO imports allowed.
Even suggesting could have the authorities knocking on doors.
Believe me that is not a great experience.
The numbers of Chaffinches has actually increased over the last couple of years
as some of the Melb. based Maltese have done well and have got a number on the perch

I know perfectly well.
As I said, I'm sure he was joking. And it was on email. So it's harder to tell!!!!!!
