Found 3 baby zebra finches on the aviary floor this morning they were still alive but pretty cold. They are very young no feathers eyes closed looks like the nest the parents build the bottom fell out of. I got the dog's heating pad out and placed them on that for awhile I tryed to fix the nest up and put them back but Mum and Dad will have nothing to do with them. I think the nest does not look the same and they have not gone in it all day, to-night I have brought them in on the heating pad and did get the toothpick out and they did take some hand raising mixture. As I have posted before I did hand raise a finch successfully but was a bit older than these ones. If they keep opening their mouths will I keep feeding them I read that when they are this young the parents feed them to only the equivalent to a couple of seeds. Will give it ago will be a lot tougher this time, the last little finch did'nt start to eat by itself for 10 weeks. Will give you an update. :)

Thanks Deb, As you know I posted some photos of the other little finch I hand raised. This will be more of a challenge 3 of them especially trying to be here to feed them every couple of hours. Will give it my best shot.

Im sure you will do your best , at least you have some experience now so you will be less anxious about it all .

Fingers crossed for you, would you be able to get some pics done while you are feeding them? Would love to see that.

Hi Deb and Diane, You would not believe it that little finch I hand fed for 10 weeks got out of the aviary to-day I was so cranky with my self. After all the effort I put into raising her.Was pretty upset as I know she would not have lasted long as we have quite a few butcherbirds hanging around the aviaries at the moment.
I am posting some pictures of these 3 little zebs I have started to hand feed after finding them on the aviary floor.I did try and put them back again to-day but no one came near them. My problem is in the photo as you can see the crop is full of alot of air I am feeding them every 1 1/2 hours during the day they do not take much at all. Two seem to eat a bit better than the other one. They are to little to beg just open there mouths when I move them. I don't think they are taking enough but will keep trying.

Don't suppose you have another nest you could foster them too?

Sorry to hear your other little bird escaped . If only they knew what was in store for them in the great outdoors .
I had a Emblema escape once and it was almost as if it was happy to get away , it didn't look back or stop until it was well out of sight .
