Hi All, I would like to hear how your Gouldians have bred so far this season ?
I have done all the same things in preparation, but my birds have been very slow to get fully into breeding. Some birds are allmost ready to have their 2nd nest fledge, and some are still getting to their 1st. All the birds are healthy ,so that has no influence. I live in central QLD, and we have had a lot of wet weather, and i was keen to know if others have had a slow season, and if they feel that the weather has played a part in this.
Are your Gouldians slow to breed in 2011

I have 18 young in 3 avaires and another2 pairs on eggs. My 4th aviary has 3 pairs and they have looked to do nothing. I have no idea why,but am really happy overall. We have had a pretty mild summer in adelaide this year, so this might of helped

Paired up 9 pairs between Australia Day and Valentines day.
At the moment I have 5 young about 5 days old, 2 lots of eggs due to hatch out in the next day or so. Some the following week.
Then there are those pairs playing hard to get!

I already have 14 young from 3 pairs. 6 have fledged. I am also waiting in anticipation for one particular youngster to fledge as he/she seems to be a much lighter colour than all the others. This from a pair of normals. Genetics is a wonderful thing but I digress...
I set my boxes up in Mid January and I had 2 pairs go down within 2 weeks of this. We have had a nice mild summer in Adelaide, not overly wet though so maybe they enjoyed the milder weather at the start of the year. My canaries also bred throughout summer which I thought was a bit strange.

I have just 2 pair this year and both have only laid in the last week. I used to keep heaps of gouldians and they always started mid/late January. In my case I suspect its because they continued breeding late last year (and hence moulted late) - I still have a few half-coloured young in my holding cage from last year.
