My bird keeping started with breeding budgies in 1969 and I then converted to breeding native Australian finches in 1972, over the years I have lived and bred birds in the UK, USA, Asia and Europe. I have bred Bantams, Pheasants, Peacock, Guinea fowl, Quails, a lot of the smaller parrot species but… since moving to Brisbane, Queensland. I have focused on breeding finches from the genus Lonchura (Mannikins/Munias/Nuns). I also breed native Australian Bush Budgies (in their wild green form). I am keen to learn from the members of this site and if possible share some of my knowledge and skills with others new to finch breeding. All these years of bird keeping and I am still learning every day.

I would like to form a group of interested finch breeders to specialize in disappearing Lonchura species and/or their subspecies (Javan Munias, Tri-coloured Munias, Chestnut Munias [Black-headed Nuns], White-headed Munias [White-headed Nuns], Scaly-breasted Munias [Nutmeg/Spice finch] Java Sparrow :geek: and any other race of Lonchura that may still be existing within Australia to leave something for those finch breeders that follow in years to come. Just like you and I wish others had done for us.

I am interested in purchasing any of the more unusual Lonchura species and/or their subspecies. Particularly the Asian Munias or New Guinea Mannikins. If you have some and wish to sell them, PM me with the type, quantity and price

I will buy related or unrelated birds. I am also happy to organise and pay freight from anywhere in Australia.

The Lonchura species known to be in Australia (According to the gonvernment) are:
Lonchura bicolor - Black-and-white Munia
Lonchura cantans - African Silverbill
Lonchura ferruginosa - White-capped Munia
Lonchura griseicapilla - Grey-headed Silverbill
Lonchura leucogastroides - Java Munia
Lonchura maja - White-headed Munia
Euodice (Lonchura) malabarica - Indian Silverbill
Lonchura malacca - Tricolour Munia
Lonchura punctulata - Spice Finch
Lonchura striata - White-rumped Munia

And that's it... so no New Guinea birds... Which isn't good.

I have neither the experience nor know-how to keep anything but Nutmeg Mannikins, but when I get mire experience I would be very happy to specialize in a rare species of Munia!

Thank you to all who have welcomed me. :D
nrg800- Thanks for the list of lonchura that are suppose to be in Australia. Can I ask where you got this list from, as there are some birds on this list I have not seen for many years, but... would love to get ahold of them.
I also breed Nutmegs/Spice Finches and have a lot of fun with them. Breeding Nutmegs is still contributing to the sustainability of the species. How many do you have?
Are they breeding well for you? Any chance you can send me a close-up photo of the head and breast of one or more of your nutmegs?
Once again Thankyou.

I don't have any birds in my aviary yet, due to the fact that it isn't quite built yet, but when I get them I imagine they the birds I get would be wild-caught birds, which mean they would be race topela

So there are parts of the country where you can legally get wild caught spice finches? And wild green budgies?
Welcome to the forum and Loncuras are one of my favourite though I only have Javas and Bengos at the moment. But don't knock them. They are both great birds. And this hobby is about the birds you love. And about preserving all finches.
