A pair of my Gouldians are spending the night in their nest box. Could this mean i can expect the pitter patter of tiny feet soon or are they just getting out of the cold? I've noticed the male singing his heart out during the day but the hen totally ignores his efforts. I haven't seen him dance yet. Does the entire courtship performance have to be completed before successful mating takes place?

Hmm  my gouldians normally sleep in a nest box when they are cold, but then when you say that the male is singing his heart out you could be onto something else. They will only mate if the female is 100% ready and already you can tell the male is, so you might be onto something exciting. But don't get your hopes up too early. Having eggs and babies in this cold weather can be fatal and that's why I best leave breeding for the warmer months. Other than that, good luck I hope all goes well for them. :D

Hi Shep,
My gouldians sleep in the tea-tree provided throughout the avairy. So when they are in the box at night it means they are on eggs....however to confuse the issue i have 3 pairs that have not gone to nest yet...and the cocks have been singing their hearts out all season...but my guess would be you have eggs if your birds have adequate space throughout the avairy to roost at night and are spending the night in the nest box...cheers, Paul

I have a pair of normals in a cabinet, never saw any singing or dancing. You would think there wasnt any birds in there at all. There have been times I thought they might both be dead in the box! I very rarely see either of them, they have always been sat in the box on eggs.
So my thoughts were "oh what great parents these will be"......wrong!
Found a youngster yesterday morning outside the nest, dead, this morning one poor little thing hasnt even been able to fully hatch out before he was booted outside, I put this one back as it was still alive.
Hope this pair get the hang of this soon :? Still 2 eggs to go although only one looks fertile.
